North-east England is under new, tighter restrictions following a spike in Covid-19 infections in the area. The tighter controls mean that pubs and bars – and casinos are included in this, despite not being allowed to open until some time after pubs earlier in the year – are now subject to a 10pm curfew. Health secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the measures in a House of Commons statement on September 17th, with their enforcement beginning Friday, September 18th. The heightened restrictions apply to: Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Gateshead, Sunderland, and County Durham.

A spokesperson for the Betting and Gaming Council said: “This is a hugely disappointing and illogical decision which will inevitably lead to job losses in the casino sector.

“While we fully support the need to act quickly to protect public health, the simple fact is that casinos are among the most Covid-secure in the country, so ordering their closure as a way of slowing the spread of the virus makes no sense.

“Just last month, casinos in England were given the go-ahead by public health experts to re-open after they saw for themselves the anti-Covid measures they had put in place – from Perspex screens to best-in-class track and trace systems.

Central government and local authorities are considering the drastic measure, which would see venues across the country forced to close their doors.

In a letter to Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden, BGC chief executive Michael Dugher and Genting UK boss Paul Wilcock say such a move would “devastate” casinos, which do between 50 and 70 per cent of their trade after 10pm.

Britain’s casinos – which employ 14,000 people and have contributed £1.3bn in tax to the Treasury over the last three years – only re-opened in August after closing in March as part of the country-wide coronavirus lockdown.

They have been praised for their stringent anti-Covid measures, such as limits on capacity, Perspex screens and sophisticated track and trace systems, with Public Health England and the Department for Health and Social Care declaring casinos were not “higher risk” in July.

In their letter, Mr Dugher and Mr Wilcock point out that a typical casino visitor is aged 48, well above the age profile that ministers and councillors would be trying to target with the imposition of a curfew.

Furthermore, groups of young adults do not tend to gather in casinos to drink after 10pm, with venues vowing to take action to actively prevent it.

The letter says: “To ensure the sector’s survival it is vital that any additional Covid social distancing measures, such as curfews, are not imposed on businesses that have demonstrated that they are Covid-secure and do not cater for the age group targeted by the measure.

“The introduction of a blanket measure such as curfews would certainly result in many thousands of redundancies in a very short timeframe.  It is no exaggeration to state that it would devastate the UK land-based casino sector.”

It goes on: “The conclusion to draw is that the impact of a casino curfew on Covid numbers would be negligible but the impact on our businesses would be catastrophic.”

With attendances at casinos at between 5 and 60% of pre-Covid levels, the letter also urges the Government to either extend the furlough scheme – which is due to end next month – or introduce other targeted support for businesses trying to get back on their feet.

Michael Dugher said: “We support the need to act swiftly to protect public health, and thank the Government for the support they have given the UK’s casinos so far.

“However, a blanket 10pm curfew on businesses would be catastrophic and force casinos to close once again – this time for good. It would certainly result in many thousands of redundancies, while having a negligible impact on the spread of Covid.

“Since reopening In August, casinos have been able to protect customers and staff through providing best in class safety measures, including sophisticated track and trace systems. Any new social distancing measures should be focused on the areas and age groups of the country at most risk, not just arbitrarily applied across the board.” | | |

Videoslots has also put in place its own in-house trading team who will unveil a number of gamification features and cross-over style products that will appeal to its well-established casino player base.

The project is being spearheaded by industry veteran Martin Calleja, who believes the timing is right for a new approach that will both excite customers and disrupt the industry.

He added: “We expect sports betting will be close to being back normal next month and, with sports fans not necessarily able to attend matches in person, a fresh new sportsbook will be the next best thing with which to engage their favourite sports.

“Videoslots is now in a place where we can invest, increase our offering and differentiate it, hence the decision to go with our own technology, platform and team rather than a cookie-cutter approach that would blend into the background.

“We are very conscious that we have to take our casino audience with us and then grow it in a socially responsible way by adding sports fans looking for an alternative betting product.

“We’ve always done very well at engaging with our audience and providing a better user experience than is available elsewhere. As a result, we’re very excited about replicating that in the sportsbook arena.”

In addition to its SGA licence, Videoslots Sports holds a Malta Gaming Authority licence and the operator is currently in the process of applying to the equivalent regulators in the United Kingdom and Denmark. | | |

The resumption of the Premier League and English Football League will see hundreds of matches shown live on Sky TV and BT Sport.

But expert analysis of the “whistle to whistle” ban on TV betting ads shows the amount seen by 4 to 17-year-olds during matches was reduced to almost zero in its first year in operation.

And overall, the amount of gambling ads viewed by youngsters has fallen by 70% over the full duration of live sport programmes.

Under the ban, betting adverts must not be shown on TV during commercial breaks from five minutes before a live sporting event begins until five minutes after it ends, prior to the 9pm watershed.

It was introduced by members of the Betting and Gaming Council – which represents the regulated betting industry, excluding the National Lottery – on 1 August, 2019.

A study by Enders Analysis found that during the whistle to whistle period, the number of betting ads seen by children during commercial breaks fell by 97%.

The BGC highlighted the findings as football fans gear up to hundreds of live Premier League and English Football League matches in the 2020/21 season.

The first televised match will be the Championship clash between Watford and Middlesborough tonight (FRI).

Ongoing Covid-19 restrictions mean that the vast majority of fans will have no option other than to watch their favourites from the sofa rather than at the ground.   Whistle-to-whistle  

The Enders Analysis study also found that the whistle to whistle ban contributed to a reduction of 1.7 billion views of betting ads during the first five months it was in operation.

Meanwhile, there were 109 million fewer gambling ads viewed across four comparative weekends as a result of the ban.

Total betting advertising exposure during live sport before 9pm also declined by 78%.

In addition, the research found that there was no apparent displacement of gambling advertising to other evening sports programmes, with the number of post-watershed ads also down by 28%.

Since being set up last year, the BGC has introduced a range of measures aimed at improving standards in the industry.

These include a requirement that at least 20% of TV and radio betting advertisements are safer gambling messages, cooling off periods on gaming machines, new ID and age verification checks, encouraging deposit limits and boosting funding for research, education and treatment.

And from 1 October, tough new measures are being introduced to further prevent under-18s from seeing betting ads online.

Michael Dugher, chief executive of the Betting and Gaming Council, said: “As a football fan, I can’t wait for the new season in England to start.

“But with matches still being played behind closed doors because of Covid-19, supporters will have no choice but to watch their favourites on TV.

“I’m therefore delighted by the success of the whistle to whistle ban in virtually eliminating the ability of young people to see betting adverts on TV during commercial breaks.

“The BGC was set up to improve standards in our industry, and this is a clear example of that commitment.

“At the same time, we urge the Government to work with us to crack down on black market operators who have no interest in safer gambling or protecting their customers and do not work to the same responsible standards as BGC members.

Rivers has developed an extensive “Sure Bet Sanitized” cleaning program in partnership with Janitronics and airPHX Technology, along with a number of other new operating procedures in order to comply with, or surpass, the state’s new COVID-19 casino reopening protocols.
All guests and Rivers team members will be required to wear face coverings (masks).
A complete list of property-wide modifications and safety precautions – introduced to help protect guests and Team Members – will be announced soon and published on the casino’s website.

To comply with state guidelines and promote social distancing, Rivers Casino will be limiting gaming floor capacity to 25% occupancy until further notice. Guests will only be allowed to enter and exit the gaming floor at the entrance near the casino’s Event Center and The Landing Hotel.
The popular Rivers Sportsbook will be reopened, along with slots. Table games will not be available at this time, but will be back in action as soon as possible.
Valet Parking, the Poker Room, The Event Center, Mian, and Johnny’s To-Go, are not scheduled to reopen at this time. However, Flipt, the casino’s burger and sandwich restaurant, will be reopened with an enhanced menu, including select favourites from Duke’s Chophouse and pizza from Johnny’s To-Go. Duke’s Chophouse will reopen with a limited menu and reduced hours of operation.
The Landing Hotel will also reopen next week with all state required health and safety protocols in place.
